AxGen Genetics

AxGen is led by renowned geneticist Stuart Kim, who left his position as Professor of Genetics and Developmental Biology at Stanford University in order to start AxGen. He draws on more than two decades of research experience to provide AxGen a cutting- edge scientific framework that is rigorous and novel. While at Stanford, Professor Kim had broad research interests including sports genetics, research on human aging and longevity and genomics.

AxGen Screening Benefits

DNA Can Impact Your Bone Health

Up to 80% of your bone health is influenced by your genetics.

See if your DNA may be impacting your bone health.

Lower genetic markers for bone formation can make building and maintaining bone density more challenging.

One-time screening — your DNA doesn’t change.

A quick, simple test that provides lasting insight into your bone health.

I would highly recommend this place. The owner Johnny may be the most knowledgeable person on bone density and body composition that I have ever met. He takes the time to explain everything you need to know. I will definitely be back for future scans.

How does it work?

Once you place your order, a kit will be mailed to your address. You will supply your saliva return the kit to AxGen. AxGen will then screen your sample and send you the results.

How long does it take?

It takes about 15-minutes to complete your part and about 4-weeks to get your results.

How informative are the genetic tests?

The Bone Mineral Density Genetic Test (Kim, 2018)

  • The Pearson's correlation with bone mineral density is 50%. Pearson's correlation is a statistical term that measures the strength of the linear relationship between the genetic score and measured BMD, where 100% means that they are the same and 0% means that there is no relationship. For genetic tests of complex traits such as BMD, a value of 50% is high and means that there is good agreement between the genetic test and BMD.
  • The area-under-the-curve (AUC) for predicting osteoporosis is 0.79. This means that the genetic test can correctly classify people as either having low BMD (i.e. osteoporosis) or unaffected 79% of the time. For comparison, smoking has an AUC of 0.80 for classifying lung cancer.
  • A low BMD genetic score (<10th percentile) indicates a 17-fold increased risk for osteoporosis.
What if I have a high genetic score?

Good News! Individuals with high scores correlate with high bone mineral density and a lower risk for osteoporosis.

Does a person's age and sex change the projected risk for osteoporosis?

Your genetics do not change, so your risk for osteoporosis due to genetics will not change. However, your age and sex affect your risk for osteoporosis, so your absolute risk for osteoporosis increases as you get older and if you are female (especially post-menopausal). T scores drop by an average of 0.18 over 10 years, so any person could expect a T score in 20 years that is 0.36 units below the current value. Women get osteoporosis four times more than men.

What if I have already had my DNA Screened with 23andme or Ancestry?

As a client with 23andme or Ancestry, all you need to do is order the "AxGen 23andme or Ancestry" option, greatly reducing your cost.

You will receive an email from AxGen with instructions. Once you upload your data to AxGen, you can then be screened for bone density.

How do I see my AxGen Report?

You can view your personal results dashboard via AxGen's secure web application on any internet-connected device. Your AxGen Report is broken down into two sections: Injuries and Performance Markers. Each category in these sections displays your genetic results, recommendations on specific actions to take and video exercises.
